Mini Cupcakes

In honor of E’s upcoming 6th birthday on May 1st, we wanted to share this quick and easy crochet cupcake pattern. These sweet little sugarlings are sure to be a huge hit in the play kitchen or on an imaginative picnic.

This pattern is rated E for Easy. Since this is an Amigurumi pattern, you don’t need to make chains at each round start point. In order to keep your place in your work I suggest using a stitch marker or safety pin. Only beginner stitches are used: single crochet= sc, increase (sc 2 in 1 stitch)= inc, decrease (2 stitches sc’d together)= sc2tog, dc= double crochet, sl= slip stitch

You’ll need:

  • Size G hook
  • Small amounts of worsted or bulky (for larger cupcakes) scrap yarn
  • Poly-Fill or other stuffing
  • Yarn/darning needle

Cupcake bottom:

Make a magic ring of 6 stitches.

One: Inc around (2 sc in each stitch) =12

Two: Inc around into every other stitch =18

Three: Inc around into every 2nd stitch =24

Four:Sc around in the back loop of each stitch =24

Five to Eight: Sc around then finish off leaving a long yarn tail to sew the top to the bottom with. =24

Cupcake top:

Make a magic ring of 6 stitches.

One: Inc around (2 sc in each stitch) =12

Two: Inc around into every other stitch =18

Three: Inc around into every 2nd stitch =24

Four to Eight: Sc around in each stitch =24

Nine: Now you will be creating the scallop laced “icing.” To do this slip yarn (sl) in the first stitch, double crochet (dc) 3 times in the next stitch, sl, 3 dc in the next and so on until round is complete. Finish off and weave in yarn end.

Assembly:

Take the long tail from the bottom piece and sew it to the underside of the top piece until about
2″ remain. I sew my top to the bottom at round
Eight of the top piece. Stuff and finish sewing, weaving in yarn end well. Pull yarn tail and snip off end.
